Website Submission - How to Submit Your URL

Website submission –The search engines use spiders (robots or “crawlers”) to identify all internet content.  They are constantly roaming the internet and indexing sites.  With a new website, the question is always, how long it will take before they find you.

In order to get your site recognized sooner, submit your URL (http://www.mywebsitename.com) to each search engine.  Here’s how to go about doing that.

First, prior to your website submission, it is important that you create a meta-tag for each of your pages.  Web building software programs typically advise you on the meta-tag creation process.  It is this HTML element that provides information about your pages.  It also helps the search engine robots categorize them correctly.

Meta-tags are not as important today for rankings as they were in the 90s.  However they are still useful.  In fact, some speculate that meta-tags are still important for Yahoo searches.

Today, incoming links, content quality, the number of pages etc…, are the more important items in terms of Google, Yahoo and Bing ranking.

Using relevant keywords in both your page’s meta-tags and content is important. Although including keywords in your content is more important, try to cover both.

Some optimization experts say including the keywords in your meta-attribute have little if any bearing on your website ranking.

I say it doesn’t hurt, besides, Google is always changing it algorithms.  What is not important today could be important tomorrow.  It is easier to do it now than to have to go back and correct hundreds of pages later.

In terms of the submission, 85% of all users surf the internet using Google, Yahoo or Bing.  These are the most important search engines in terms of submitting your URL.

For a website submission to Google, go to http://google.com/addurl/

You need only submit the URL of your homepage or your “top-level” page as Google refers to it.

Don’t worry, if your website has multiple pages, the Googlebot will find them.

There are several different pages which you can utilize for Yahoo submissions.  One is for e-commerce sites.  The other is for informational and all others.  You can find the submission pages for both at http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/submit.

For a MSN website submission, you should go to Bing.com.

Whether or not these additional efforts are necessary is debatable.  Search engine spiders would find your site eventually, if you are willing to wait that is.  I personally think that you should make an effort to submit your site to the search engines.  Help the process along whenever you can.

Once you have completed the website submission process, start working on your links.

If you are new to website publishing, you should take this time to learn about the latest optimization techniques and create more content.  Not only do you want to be listed by the search engines but you also want the highest possible ranking.

"What should my website be about, help me choose something?"  This is the one question that I hear all the time.  Everyone is knowledgeable about something.  It could be sewing, photography, skydiving etc...You are not trying to re-invent the wheel.  All you are trying to do is share a knowledge of something that you are passionate about and there is demand for.  Your visitors will benefit and so will you.  Win/Win!
