Using Downloads to Jump Start Your Mailing List

The truth of the matter is that you can create/build a list by offering something as simple as a relevant download on your website.
Now I know what you are thinking. You don't have a high powered product that you can provide as a free download. Heck you are probably thinking that you don't even have a basic product that can be downloaded. Good news, you don't need to offer a powerhouse download or full featured app.
The most important thing that your download must offer is value. Your prospects must see enough value that they are more than willing to provide their email address in exchange.
Now let's be honest, slapping together a download, something simple, and adding your link may not be enough to attract decent prospects. You will have to hustle a bit. There is a little bit of homework. Two things come to mind.
First, take some time, sit down, think about where your download will appear on your website. It should be prominently displayed. Ideally, a dedicated page and a link to it from every other page on the website would be great.
Second, let's not forget about the marketing. No way to escape it. You have to put some effort into the promotion of your download. When promoting, elaborate. Your prospects are interested in the virtues/value of your download. Let them know why it is a great download and why they should download.
With a little effort and great value you will soon be on your way. A great mailing list full of great prospects.
