How to install Wordpress:
1. Subscribe to a web host service. It should support MySQL databases and PHP.
2. Request or create a MySQL Database and Database user on your web server. Secure it with a strong password.
3. Download the most recent version of Wordpress. Visit Wordpress.org.
4. Unzip your downloaded files to your computer and upload the files to your hosting account using FTP. If you need FTP software try FileZilla.
5. Change the name of the file “wp-config-sample.php” The new file name should be “wp-config.php”.
6. In your text editor, open the file “wp-config.php”. Follow the instructions given in “Editing/updating wp-config.php”. Enter your database details to create your account.
7. Copy the Wordpress data/files (unzipped) to the intended location on the web server. You can either place the unzipped files in the root of your domain or you can create a new directory specifically for Wordpress installation.
8. If you wish to integrate/incorporate Wordpress into your domain root, move all unzipped contents/files of the Wordpress directory to your root directory on your server.
9. If you wish to install Wordpress in subdirectory, create and name a subdirectory. Upload the unzipped contents to this directory on your server.
10. Run the installer, proceed as follows:
•Run the installation script. Access “wp-admin/install.php” via your web browser.
To install WordPress in a Root directory, navigate to
‘http://example1.com/wp-admin/install.php’
To install WordPress into a separate subdirectory, navigate to
‘http://example1.com/WordPress/wp-admin/install.php’
If you have installed WordPress correctly, look for the prompt to enter your site title, username, password and email.
How to install Wordpress: Wrap up
Unzip the file/WordPress theme that you downloaded for your website. Place its content in ‘http://example.com/wp-content/themes/newtheme’. Now, proceed as follows:
• Click on the “Appearance” section on the WordPress control panel and activate an appropriate theme
• Click on the “Pages or Post” section on the left to add your website pages or posts, such as Home, About Us, Products, News and Contact Us. You can add blank pages later. When saving the pages, click on “Publish” and then click on “Update” icon.
• Click on the “Settings” section on the left and then choose the “Reading” sub-section.
• Set the first option- Front page displays- to “Static” page. This is important because if you don’t make your selection, the first post will be displayed in home page.
• Choose the content for your homepage (from the drop down list).
• Save your settings.
You can customize your web site’s look as you see fit. Play around with it. Make it more attractive/ stylish. Just follow the steps as mentioned below:
• Open your website in an HTML editor ( Dreamweaver, Kompozer etc…)
• Navigate to the folder containing the PHP files, style.css(Style sheet) and images.
• Edit the style sheet as necessary. If you want, you can add your own style sheet, replacing the contents of the style.css file.
• As a safety precaution, always save the new style.css with a different name and add a reference to your style sheet in header.php file. This way if you want to go back to the original, you can.
