How Does Google’s Adsense Filtering Work?

1. Content Relevance: An ad’s relevance, in relation to your content, is probably the single most important filtering criteria when it comes to Google Adsense. Some say that Google’s filtering concept is its secret weapon, creating a huge advantage compared to other programs. Google’s bots scan a site/page to determine its content, main topics/subjects. Armed with this information, Google then serves relevant ads.
In addition, since the Adsense program is Global; the relevance of a particular ad is also selected based upon a website’s language and or its geography.
2. Content Appropriateness: All websites are based in part on some form of a theme. Some websites are considered family friendly and some are not. Google’s Adsense is technically open to every advertiser, every website owner. The only exception is that you must comply with Google’s Adsense Program policy.
Google controls its ad’s content by utilizing strict editorial guideline rules and language filters. This helps to avoid offending anyone that might view its ads.
3. Competition Filters: I am sure that you wouldn’t be too happy to learn that competitor’s ads were showing up on your website. As a website owner, Google addresses this issue by providing you with a choice, should specific advertisers/competitors ads be shown on my website or not?
4. Finally, there is the default ads filter option. If for any reason Google’s Adsense program is unable to serve relevant ads on your website (ads not suitable, certain ads are unavailable etc…) default ads are used.
