Have You Been Optimizing You Website's Content?

Ok, so you've been creating great content. You are just about ready to put your feet up and let the money roll in, until you learn that you also need to optimize your content. The question now is, why?

It is important to optimize content because it helps to get your website noticed. It also helps to improve your search engine ranking. Search engine optimization or (SEO) techniques play an extremely important role in improving your site's ranking and visibility. Think of SEO as the process of making your website's content search engine friendly. Now remember, I have always suggested that you make your site user friendly first and search engine friendly second. It is important to please both users however, take care of your visitors first.

Just think of SEO as a set of techniques designed to attract the search engine spiders or bots (optimize your website). The goal is to have these spiders crawling your website on a regular basis. This helps to index your content as well as rank for certain keywords.

How do most people find things on the internet?
They query a search engine like Google or Yahoo. The search engine provides us with a list containing its relevant results.

Most people expect to find what they are looking for on the first page of these results. Rarely will most look beyond the first page. What this tells us is that when a user searches the internet for a keyword/phrase, a relevant site like ours has to rank high enough so that we appear on the first page. A website needs a high SERP (search engine results position) in order to get noticed on the first page.

So how do we implement some of these SEO techniques?
First, each page of your website should be designed with a specific keyword or phrases in mind. Each page of your content should have relevant keywords or phrases sprinkled throughout. Now, let's not over do it though. You don't want your content labeled as spam. Shoot for about 1 relevant keyword for every 100 words of content. This method helps the search engines determine what you content is about and index it.

The second technique to remember when optimizing your content involves your Meta tags. For each of your site's pages, ensure that your Meta description, Meta Keywords and Meta Title tags are up to date. These three tags should reflect the actual content that is found on your page.

Now obviously there are several other things that go into creating a successful page however the proper utilization of Keywords and Meta tags definitely help with the indexing of your content.

Finally, you may still wonder, what is the real benefit of an optimized website. Very simply put, free targeted traffic. All other things equal, the more traffic, the better your conversion rates. The better your conversion rates the higher your ROI (return on investment).
